They never really did a good job of explaining the Pledge of Allegiance to us preschoolers. For a good many years, I thought that the line "liberty and justice for all" was suggesting that we all get a steaming cup of Liber Tea, whatever THAT is. With a side of justice.

when i was in kindergarten, i thought that when you became a teacher, you were forced to live at the school. this theory was disproven when i saw my kindergarten teacher at the grocery store one day. in a panic, i ran up to her, asking how she'd escaped.

I used to think that teacher training courses only consisted of prospective teachers being taught how to have beautiful handwriting and that they practised doing their handwriting 24/7. It's just that teachers always had such perfect handwriting and I couldn't figure out how they ALL could. Furthermore, what else would primary school teachers need to be taught because they already knew everything there is to know about?!?

I used to believe when someone got "kicked out" of school, the principal would literally grab you by the shirt and actually kick you out of the building!

Back before I was in public school, when i was in home school, because of various TV stereotypes, I believed that in college, there weren't actually classes. You just took college entrance exams and drank and ate pizza and went to wild parties while you were there. I'm here and I can assure you I'm doing none of those.

When I was in Kindergarten, the teacher said if you copied someone, your teeth would fall out. Now I understand that the teacher meant copying papers from other people.
One time the teacher elt us pick out what flavor chocolate we wanted and my friend copied what kind I got and I yelled "NO!!! YOUR TEETH WILL FALL OUT!!!" and she just said "Who cares, I already lost all of them."

When I was in seventh grade, I had to take a keyboarding class, but when they said "keyboarding," I thought they meant piano. I thought it was really weird when I got there and heard computers talking. It was a school for the blind, and computers have speech software. I still didn't realize it was a typing class until I was sitting at a computer. Woops.

One day in first grade I missed a day of school and also that weeks spelling test. The next day my teacher told me I had a make up test and would need to stay in from recess along with another girl in my class who had missed as well. Never missing a test before I didn't know what a makeup test was so with my 6 year old brain I came to the conclusion that the other girl and I had been picked to try on make up to see how it looked. Until recess I was so excited to get to my "make over". I dreamed of pictures being taken, other kids comming in from recess surprised to see me done up. I was also plauged why I was picked how I was picked and the same thing for the other girl. Finally recess came, I walked to my teacher with a great big smile and was puzzled when handed what looked like home work. She stated that it needed to be turned in Monday and I could now sit down to take my test. My dreams of makeup stardom were shaddered.

When i was young (i was in kindergarten) i thought that the teachers lived at the school and i thought that they changed in the bathrooms and they would sleep on our napping mats and then they would always be cranky and mean because the mats were uncomfortable.

I used to believe that the teacher's lounge was where the teachers went to make out.
I used to think that the name of our American flag was "Salute" and I went around pointing at the flag and saying "Salute, the flag!"
Years later I also thought that there was a General named "General Welfare" and that he was really important because written right into the preamble of our constitution is "...promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty...."
I used to believe that teachers didn't actually have first names and they were all christened with the name 'Mr' or 'Miss' so they knew they were gonna be a teacher when they grew up.

When my mom told me I would be going to school in a few months, I got really excited. I'd never seen a school before as I didn't have any older siblings and had always stayed home with my mom, so I though the school would be so beautiful, with a big red ribbon tied to the front of the building. On my first day of school, I can remember being very disappointed that that wasn't the case.

When I first heard the name J. K. Rowling (of Harry Potter fame) I thought it was Jake A. Rowley. As my class teacher at the time was called Mrs Rowley, I concluded that her husband was called Jake and had written the entire Harry Potter series.
If only it were true.

I used to thing the words "One nation, Under God" were really "One nation, Underground". I always said it dutifully, but wondered why!
