I used to believe…

When my sister who is 2yrs older than me started school at the at the age of 6 she would come home with stories of going into the hall for morning prayers, maybe it was an accent thing (we live in newcastle) but i was convinced she and all the school stood round a huge hole in the middle of the school and prayed not to fall in.

My mother enrolled me in pre-school at the university where she was pursuing a degree. My first day there, we were told to expect a fire drill. I had never heard this phrase, and when the loud siren went off, I fell to the floor and started to scream bloody murder. They had to carry me outside. I thought a fire drill was a drill that would come and set us all on fire.

When I first learned the Pledge of Allegiance in school, I thought I had to say the whole thing EVERY time I saw the flag.

I used to think that my school headteacher was called the Head Mischief as opposed to the Head Mistres.
Well, I only ever saw her when I'd been up to mischief!

I used to believe…

when i was in the 2nd grade my family moved, and thus i had to go to a new school. We had moved from CT to VA and things were quite different, everything seemed strange in fact. My first day at school i remember raising my hand to tell the teacher i had to use the rest room. she said," the lavatory is down the hall to the right." never having heard this word before i thought she was saying "labratory" and had misunderstood me. when i repeated myself and she again told me to go use the "lavatory" i thought...these people are freaks!! , no way am i peeing in the science room!! LOL and i wondered all day if maybe they did experiments on pee there or something. LOL

I used to believe…

When I was in kindergarten and year 1, I always wondered how the teachers knew just what to teach and when. My theory was (and I have never, ever told anyone this) that the teachers had invisible headphones that only teachers could see, and someone sat somewhere and told them over a radio what they had to do. Then later I discovered they use lesson plans and a syllabus and stuff. I'm not entirely sure I believed my theory myself, but it's what I came up with.

I used to believe…

We all believed at primary school (aged 7-11)that any single teachers of the opposite sex were always having a secret, passionate affair. I suppose it was being kept a secret from our stern headmistress.

i used to believe that it was a sin (i'm a catholic) to not pray during the moment of silence after the pledge. i thought it was something thati needed 2 confess to the priest!

I thought that teachers were assigned to certain grades based upon how smart they were, i.e., the ones who taught first grade were the least intellligent, the 2nd grade teachers were a bit smarter than the first grade teachers, and the 4th grade teachers must be the smartest teachers of them all. Then I told my 2nd grade teacher a really big vocabulary word ("entomologist") that my 1st grade teacher had taught me the year before, and when my 2nd grade teacher truly didn't know what it meant, it blew my mind.

I had a friend (Tom) at primary school who was forever getting his words mixed up. He arrived home one afternoon and told his mother he had been exercising in the school's new gin museum (he meant gymnasium).

Whwn i was in kindregarden, i used to get out to wait for my mom, coming to take me home, and my teacher was always terrified that i got lost. So she told me that a gipsy man comes and takes children away and puts potatoes slices on their eyes, and they get blind. I used to believe that untill i was 17.

When I was little I believed that teachers slept in the school...didn't have families or lives of their own. Hehe.

I used to believe that exercise books actually contained exercises of the keep fit variety. I must have bought four from the local shop before realising there was no mistake and they were supposed to be blank.

I used to believe that my 'baby' school that I attended from the age of four and a half, was built from pieces of a ship. The thing is all my friends thought the same as me. Where we picked up this strange fact is beyond me, just goes to show when you are a gullible 5 year old....you'll believe anything!

When I was waiting to be enrolled in playgroup, I was really worried - I thought I'd have to be rolled for a whole day! Especially worrying, as there was usually a huge puddle outside the sweetie shop - why was I so stupid?!

My young sister-in-law used to say she had been to gym-elastics which sounded much more energetic than gymnastics!
