I thought that nobody could hear me humming... that it was just in my head. So one day in 1st grade, while we were having quiet time, my teacher kindly asked me to stop humming because I was disturbing the rest of class!

When I was in Kindergarten, my class used to recite the Pledge of Allegiance every day. When we got to the part that says "... and to the republic, for which it stands..." I thought we had our hands over our hearts to praise the "Republic of Whichit Stands." (Kind of like Puget Sound???) Didn't figure that one out until about 4th grade.

I didn't realize that school attendance was not optional. When asked how I liked my first day in first grade, I replied that it was ok, but lasted too long so I wasn't going back. Was I surprised that I had to go for at least 12 years!

I used to believe the principal had a spanking machine in his office.
My Aunt Wilma told me the spanking machine at my cousin's school had an electrical short, and the shock you got hurt worse than the spanking, until they got it fixed.

when i was in first grade, on the first day the teacher announced that, as a class, we'd be taking a trip to the lavatory. i had no idea what that was, so i assumed it was the laboratory and we'd be experimented upon. i was extremely relieved when i realized she meant the bathroom.

In school one day, second grade?, the teacher asked the students what nationality we were. The kids went around saying the usual various countries then it came my turn. I said, "I'm Cescarian." My last name being Cappucci, the teacher asked, "Do you mean Sicilian?" to which I replied, "No, Cescarian! That's what my mother always tells me."

On the morning of my first day of kindergarten, I proudly assured my mother that I would be able to read when I got home that day. I just assumed that your first day in school meant that you were than capable of reading anything.

I was utterly crushed when I found out this wasn't so.

I arrived at a new elementary school in the fifth grade. At an assembly soon after arriving, the principal mentioned that there would be an essay contest. I had never heard the word "essay" before and assumed he meant "S.A." I wracked my brain trying to think of what the abbreviation could mean.

When I was in grade school, I was under the assumption that whenever a teacher wrote "See Me!" on an assignment or test, she was commending me for a job well done. My head would swell with pride as I would prance back to my desk, certain I had done the best job of all. It wasn't until some time in my senior year of high school, when I recieved a paper back with "See Me" that it finally occured to me, what it meant. It didn't mean great, terrific, outstanding...it meant, there was something wrong!! It blew me away, all that time I thought I was just the smartest kid in class....

"I pledege allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic four witches stand. One nation, under God, invisible with liberty and justice for all. Amen."

OmiGod! Does everyone else know!! Four witches, invisible (or was God invisible?). OmiGod! What am I praying to?!

I used to believe…

When we said the pledge in class I thought it was "one nation under God, invisible..." I thought the country could be made invisible. It made me feel better because I was terrified of nuclear war.

Here's one my kids will be submitting in 20 years: at their elementary school there is an aquarium built right into the wall. Right next to it is a drinking fountain. Many kids won't use that fountain because they believe the water comes from the aquarium!

I used to think that the Pledge went, "One nation under guard". I remember saying long after I learned the real words.

At primary school, we used to sing hymns during assembly. We were given hymn books with the the words, and below each hymn was the name of its composer(s). I always used to wonder why this guy called Traditional wrote so many more hymns than everybody else.
