I used to believe…

When I was about three, I was convinced that men gave birth to boys and women gave birth to girls. My mom explained the sex and reproduction thing over and over, but it just didn't click. Then the woman across the street gave birth to a boy, and I was just baffled. (It still didn't quite click yet.)

When I was five, I asked my Sunday school teacher to define "fornication". She said it meant to use bad words. I believed her until I was a thirteen when my classmate were talking about a woman who had fornicated and therefore had sinned. I said I didn't think saying bad words should be considered a sin. They looked at me as though I were crazy and explained the concept. I still went to the dictionary to find out for sure.

At a young age my parents taught me that women got pregnant when the father's sperm combined with the mothers egg. The part about how the sperm actually got to the egg remained unexplained, however. So for a long time I thought sperm traveled through the air, essentially like pollen. So you had kids after you got married because living in the same house together increased the chances that the sperm would find its way to your wife. I thought unplanned/out of wedlock pregnancies happened when the sperm accidently happened to land on the wrong woman.

When I was in grade school (and probably into middle school), I thought sex was when a guy put his penis in a girl's belly button to get her pregnant...I'm not sure why I thought girl belly buttons were different than a guy's

I used to believe that all babies were the result of immaculate conception, and that you were either chosen by the divine to have children, or you weren't.

I used to think that eggs were at first located in the nose of the father. I don't know how I thought they got inside the mother, but once they did, I thought the parents chose which one to have as a child.

When I was younger, I thought that periods were when your breasts were growing. When I heard a girl saying that she couldn't swim because she was on her period, I was horrified because I thought that you couldn't swim for all the years you were growing breasts.

When I was 10 I had my first period- this was a year or so before the big talk at school so I remember being a little scared and thinking, "Crap! I BROKE IT!!!" I decided not to tell anyone about it for some time.

I used to think you could lose your boobs if you ate too much beef, so I became a vegetarian.

Our school district taught Reproductive Health in sixth grade. I begged my older brother to tell me what he was learning in the class (I was in fourth grade). He told me that every month I would lay an egg and then I would have to go to the bathroom, crack the egg, and let it bleed into my underwear everyday for a week. And that if I didnt do it, I would have a baby. I started crying and told my mom. Even after she gave me the proper info, I couldnt eat eggs for years after that.

I used to think that after the parents had the maximum amount of kids, the father's p*nis would eventually fall off and the mother's v*gina would close up, and they wouldn't be able to make any more kids.

I used to think that girls had "balls" and not boys, and the "balls" were slang for breasts

hall of fame

I originally thought "balls" was slang for buttocks instead of testicles.

When I was younger, people would ask me where I lived. I would say a condom. Later on I found out it was a condominium. Guess that's why everyone gave me strange looks...

When I was 13 I used to believe that the yellow bag in the shower was for me to releave myself.
I releaved myself for years in the yellow bag. My mom walked in on me once and got a good laugh.

When I was younger (about 4-5 years old) I used to believe that men could get pregnant too, because I saw fat men in the streets, so once I asked to a man when was his due date?

I thought that "wine dine 69 me" meant "have dinner and drinks with me, and then leave on highway 69". I just assumed "69 me" was an idiom that meant "love 'em and leave 'em" or meant he didn't call her the next day. This is a lyric from an Alanis Morissette song, but my belief extended beyond the song.

I used to believe that when a woman had her period, the lining retreated into the uterus by puncturing it and going through the holes. I thought those holes were the cause of menstrual blood. I also thought that the umbilical cord was a kind of tube that shot food into the uterus, so I thought there would be sandwiches and things just lying around in there.

When I was four, I found out that only women could give birth to babies, but I didn't know how. I wondered if it was my destiny to end up pregnant, and would I know when it happened? One night at dinner, I voiced my fear to mom & dad. I think they had rehearsed their answer about this iffy question before, and they told me "A man and a woman both have to decide they are having a baby." and left anything to do with human anatomy out of it. I'm sure they thought they were being really safe and politically correct, but for a few years I live in fear that if I thought (or worried) about having a baby hard enough, the thought would be strong enough to make myself pregnant. It was mind-torture.
