I used to believe…

When I was 4 my mum gave birth to my sister in a home-birth. I slept through the birth (it was 9.30, well past my bedtime!) but I was woken up to meet my new sister. Naturally I was quite excited as I went downstairs to find my parents sitting with the mid-wife and a close friend. The friend (a man) was holding my sister, and I refused to believe it was my mums baby; I thought she was hiding my sister from me. I figured the friend must have been also had a baby on the same night!
The only other thing I remember of that night is roasting chestnuts on an open fire. I find it hard to believe these memories are the same night but im sure they were.

hall of fame

I believed that children were born from a hole between a woman's breasts. I thought the hole appeared over time, which was why I didn't have one.

I took "when a man and a woman love each other very much..." too literally -- because that was all I got to hear! I thought that simply by being married (and, therefore, in love), one was risking getting pregnant at any time, regardless of any actual interaction with the couple. It all just happened by chance.

I was in Catholic school fourth grade in 1963, and most kids didn't know much about sex then. The nuns told us that you can not have a baby unless you were married. I asked my mom why that was, and she replied "That's the way God wants it!" So for some time, I believed that a person had to be married in order to get pregnant, even though I wasn't quite sure how babies were made.

When I was about 8 I didn't know what sex was exactly. I didn't know about orgasms or that sex made babies for that matter! I had seen my mom naked before and I knew that girls had hair down there. I always said to myself that I wanted the girl's panties to be on when I had sex because I didn't want to have to touch that icky hair!

I remember trying to describe my vaginal itch as a little kid (4 or 5 maybe) as 'little ladies in high heels walking around'.

My family managed to keep a straight face, even after I named the women and would talk to them whenever the vaginal itch came back.

I used to believe…

Until I was 13, I believed that the instant a boy got aroused he would spray semen everywhere. In swim class, I refused to get close to the boys (who everyone could see were suddenly very interested in us girls in our bathing suits...) just in case they sprayed at me.

i used to believe that to make babies, a daddy had to press the mummys belly button i, and say a magic word, that only grown ups knew when they loved each other!

I used to beleive all babys were in the sky, and when a man and woman had sex, a baby would fall into the womans belly.

I asked my dad what a condom was he told me you had to put it over your nose to stop bees stinging you.
Then, a bee came near my friends borhter I shouted "USE A CONDOM!!"

Having found some books about sex when I was ten or so, I read the word "pubic" and mistook it for "public." Believe me, that was very confusing!

I used to believe…

When I was in 1st grade I asked my mom where babies came from. She explained to me but I didn't understand and figured that when people kissed they were pregnant. When I watched T.V. and saw people kiss I thought, "Is that girl TRYING to get pregnant?!"

I used to believe that girls had periods because there was a sexist psychopatch who stabbed them in their genitals while they were asleep. D:

I was given the birds and bees talk at a nice young age, as I believe my parents were absolutely terrified (and rightly so!) about what I might hear later at school if they didn't head off the nonsense, as it were.

I was in a conservative family and had no concept whatsoever of sex for pleasure - I believed that people had extramarital sex because they wanted children but not each other, even by the time I was old enough that I should have known better . . .

For the life of me I couldn't figure out how a condom let sperm through but didn't let the AIDS virus through even though the AIDS virus is smaller. Confused me for two long years between ten and twelve - but no one wanted to talk about condoms, therefore it was very difficult to learn how they'd engineered this feat.

Oh, the strangeness of the world when I knew the relative size of sperm and viruses but not that people have sex for fun!!! Makes me laugh like mad now . . .

when i was 6, i asked my mom about sex, because i heard it on tv. she tried to explain it in words i would understand, but made it worse. she said, "when a boy gets excited, a liquid comes out of his peepee", and other main points. after that, everytime i would play outside and get really excited about playing, i would have to pee. i thought that was sex.

When I was little I came up to my mom and asked her, "Where do babies come from?" and she said that you just have to want one really bad and you'll get a baby. So I believed that you just really really want to have one and it will just pop up somewhere.
