I came of age during the mid-nineties, right around the time Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know" came out. I remember I was really into it it and so were my friends, but I didn't understand one part of it. I remember saying to my friend, "what does she mean by go down on you?"
I thought she meant sitting on the guy's lap. My friend said to me that it was talking about blow jobs. I didn't know what these were and so I asked.

During my young adolescence my dad occasionally worked in the public schools in the nearby bigger city, while my siblings and I were educated elsewhere. This was sort of a 'culture' moment for him every so often, and he took it seriously and would come home with sometimes horrified stories of a "what the world's children were coming to now" sort of nature (he and my mother also grew up in a very strict religious background)- young teens pregnant in the 6th grade more and more often, kissing making out and playing what they called "tonsil hockey" (which equaled a sort of glorified French kissing) at a young age on the playground.

These stories really impressed me, and so I thought I was all wizened up and knowledgable when I heard about the "tonsil hockey." When I started hearing about oral around that same time from some other source, I surely thought that this "oral sex" must be just like the bad "tonsil hockey" of the school children and that both were French kissing/deep/ heavy kissing.

I was pretty horrified when I found out what oral sex really was (I think it was the Clinton era that enlightened me- ah, the joys of growing up during the happy go lucky years of Clinton/Gore and free sex for all!), and even worse yet later, that my parents had done it with each other at my age. I could absolutely not understand why anyone would want to do such a thing or how this could be "moral."

I am still single and mostly inexperienced at the ripe age of 22. I think my sex education journeys were always a bit disturbing to me, while eventually thorough!
