I used to not get why anyone would plead guilty since wouldn't you just go to jail for sure then? (this was before I knew they would go easy on you if you plead guilty) I also thought parole and probation was the same thing
top belief!
I thought a contract killer was someone who kills people who break a contract

You know how they say a crime in punishable by "up to x years in prison or y dollars fine? Well I thought when a person was convicted they got to pick which one for their punishment
top belief!
I thought for a long time that trespassing was actually "trustpassing" because you entered even though they didn't trust you to invite you in..
top belief!
I thought if I went around yelling "The Mafia sucks!" someone from the Mafia would kill me
top belief!
I thought if someone paid your bail you didn't have to go to jail at all even if you were convicted i.e it was like a get out of jail free card. I figured most people just couldn't afford it and that's why they stayed in jail.

I thought crimes were a lot rarer than they actually were--for instance, if someone held up a gas station in Maine, it would be on the news all over the country, with pictures on TV and massive manhunts going on. When I read in a book that "there has been no crime in all of Mexico for five days" (because the criminals were all working together on a huge plot), I didn't see why that was such a big deal.

Up until I was nine or ten, I believed that if you broke the law--for anything, ever--you would go to jail for the rest of your life. I didn't know that there were such things as five-year or even three-month sentences. You went to jail, end of story, never came out.
I was very confused when I watched the third Wallace and Grommit movie and the paper said "Grommit gets life" for being framed as a sheep-stealer. I thought that meant he was going to be executed.

I used to believe that if somebody manages to break into someone's house, they are legally entitled to stay there, and that's why people lock their doors.
top belief!
I used to believe that Prosecution meant Execution so whenever I saw a sign that said "Shoplifters will be Prosecuted" I thought "Oh my gosh if I steal this they're going to kill me!".
top belief!
I used to believe that kissing was illegal until you were married, and that movie stars got special government permissions.

When I heard on TV that someone would get sentenced to "Life plus 20 years" in prison I thought that after they died their dead body would have to still be in the cell for that number of years before they could be buried.

I thought 'No Drinking and Driving' meant no drinking of any kind while driving. I was shocked my father would break the law. He was drinking Soda...
top belief!
I used to believe that when the streetlights came on it was illegal for children to be outside.

I used to belive that the black market was a flea market type place, where all criminals whould go to do thier evil shopping.
For some reason I thought sometimes when the police found a dead body it wasn't real but a fake one the bad guy had made that was so realistic even the police, coroners etc couldn't tell

When I was young, to stop me and my sister playing with the electric windows in the car our mom told us it was illegal to open car windows on the freeway. I didn't realise this wasn't the case until I was 17 years old when taking a road trip with my buddies. Embarassing.

On the way to my grandparents lake-house my aunt would always point out the large prison on the left. There was large red and white flagpole out front and I never looked past it, because I believed the flagpole was the prison (and thought it was a faraway tower). I wondered how they fit all the bad guys on top of each other.

When I was little and I'd hear on the news about someone receiving "life plus ten years" or two life sentences, I could never figure out how that worked. If someone died and still had ten years to serve, I thought they would leave their dead body sit in the cell for ten years to finish the sentence.
top belief!
I thought a highwayman was just someone who helps pave the road and stuff like that
