As a four-year-old with a very large vocabulary, I decided the "Civil War" was the one war where everybody pretended they were nice to everyone else. For example, a soldier would offer the enemy a cigarette, shoot him when he least expected it, and then pretend to be sad about it.

As a child during WWII I would listen to news reports of the fighting and they would report the Guerillas had killed so many of the enemy. I was amazed that a bunch of monkeys would be on our side.

I used to believe that old films were in black and white because thats how the world looked then.
When I was younger I used to beleive that the in the olden days everything was black and white just like on the old movies.
When I was younger and watched films in black and white, I used to think that the world was really only black and white and that the world suddenly became colourful overnight.
When I was in kindergarten our class learned the song Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer - and the line about him going down in history confused me, so I asked mum what HISTORY was. She told me it was all about old men and women and buildings. So for the longest time I imagined this giant hole (kind of like a swirling black hole) that sucked old people and buildings in - since Rudolph was going to go down into it.
Born in 1959, my early TV "world" was Black & White, then color came in to our home. Well then I used to believe the World pre 1960's was in Black & White, we humans starting seeing color post 1960!
I used to think that in the olden days everything was black and white, because thats the way it was in the movies. I remember I tried to ask my nan but was even more confused when she didnt understand me properly. I thought that way for a long time, I guess I grew out of it.
When i was a little boy, our teacher asked if we knew hwo IBSEN was. (Henrik Ibsen is one of the most famous norwegian writers (19th century))
Well, I didn't now. But i thougt it had somthing to do with ISBN (Internationnal Standard of Book Numbers (or somthing like that)). I had seen that word on the backside of schoolbooks many times, but I was wise enough not to mention it..

After watching old black and white movies, I thought that the real world was black and white, as well. I thought that colors were invented about 40 years ago.

I used to believe that concentration camps were camps where you went to improve your concentration.
i used to think that in the olden days, people couldnt see any colors, like it was all black and white, like on old televisions, after seeing several history footage on tv.
I thought that everybody who lived before me used to see things in black and white not in colour. because old photos were in black and white and old films were in black and white too, therefore people only saw things in black and white prior to 1974. I asked my mother about it when i was 6 and she rectified the situation.

I used to believe…
That world war 1 and 2 were actually called WOOL war 1 and 2. i thought sheep and wool were very important if there were two wars about them.
I used to believe that when you saw a black-and-white film on television that people only saw in black-and-white at that time. Does that make sense? In other words, people didn't see in color until color film was invented. Really.
Before colour was invented the whole world actually was sepia (brown) and white.
Damn, it is a good thing that they invented colour!
I used to think that my parents and other relatives used to see things black and white and went to colour with the creation of colour TV.
When I was told that photos weren't invented until the 1830s, and the only way people could see pictures of each other was oil painting. I thought that people in this age saw images through oil paintings.
I once got in a lot of trouble in school, when I was in Grade 5. I was obsessed with battleships, and tanks, and aircraft and all that, which isn't really all that unusual. I was obsessed with World War II at the time, but no one had ever told me about the Nazis and the Jews. One time at lunch hour I was running around with some friends of mine, and I decided to pretend that we were planes from the war. We all got to be British planes, and when I ran into some other people I knew, they became the Nazis, which at that point I think I believed was synonymous with 'German'. Because one of these 'Nazis' was Jewish, my teacher yanked me into the classroom and gave me a stern lecture about how what I did was wrong, and then made me go out and apologize to this child, who (I think) was about as oblivious as I was. The teacher then called my parents at home, and I hid in the closet, because I was afraid they would be mad at me.
I'm not sure exactly why the teacher made such a big deal out of it, when a basic clarification of terminology would have fixed the situation... I'm still obsessed with the Second World War, but I know the difference between Germans and Nazis now. :)
For a while I thought that the world WAS black and white in the old days
After comparing pictures taken by our family when I was little (which were in color) and the pictures taken when my parents were kids (which were black and white), I thought my parents were so old that colors--not color film--hadn't been invented yet.
