When I was little I always heard about this city called "Pittsburg" and I always wondered why there wasn't a town called "Armpits-burg." Finally one day I asked my parents why there was no Armpitsburg, and they just laughed, and didn't ever tell my why they thought it was so funny. I was so confused, because I was totally serious.

I used to believe that Chicago was a state. No matter how many times people tried to tell me that it was a city in the state of Illinois, I refused to believe them.

I used to think that when a president "died in office," he was just sitting at his desk in his office and would just sorta collapse.

When I was young I used to believe that every time you made a purchase, you got change back regardless of the amount of money given. I never could figure out how those candy machines where you put the coin in and turn the knob were smart enough to know how much change to give!

My grandmother lived in Boise, Idaho. We visited her one summer and while there, we rode innertubes on the Payette River. I lost one of my shoes in the river and my dad remarked it was "on its way to China". From this, I believed the Payette River went through China and China and Idaho were neighbors! I was about 5 at the time.

I used to believe when you had a credit card, you were able to make 10 freebie purchases. I got mad at my mother once for using a credit card at a hardware store when she could have used it one of the ten freebies to get something much more valuable, like a car or plane.

When i was little, my grandpa used to pretend to swallow a quarter and then magically pull it out from behind my ear or someplace. I believed that he really did behold the power to change money from one value to another because one time i gave him a quarter and a dime and i think a penny and he "swallowed" them all at once and pulled out a Fifty dollar bill. I thought he was so good that i decided to give me back the 50 for a larger bill but my change came back instead. So young and already gambling.

When I was in seventh grade, a girl I was in Social Studies class with named Susie was reading her paragraph out of our geography book. We were discussing the Shiite and Sunni Muslims and she was the first one to read about the Shiites. The rest of us in class were not quite sure how to say it but we knew it probably wasn't how we thought it should be said. Sure enough, though, Susie kept struggling through her paragraph and got to Shiite, pronouncing it "Shitty" and making the whole class and our teacher laugh. When he finally got control of himself, the teacher explained to us how to pronounce it, Shee-ite. To this day (and I've already graduated from both high school and college), I still use "Shiite" (pronounced the correct way) as a euphemism for that other expletive.

I used to believe that the French perfumed their horses. Whenever a family member would try on a perfume at the mall, my dad would remark "You smell like a French horse." It took me years to realize that he really meant 'whore,' not 'horse'.

For a very long time I thought that Germany's flag had a swastika on it ( I didn't realize it was exclusive to the Nazis). I imagined those citizens having very mixed feelings when raising it.

I used to think I could go to a country like Australia, see what the winning lottery numbers were, then fly back to Ireland in time to play those numbers anf become a millionaire. It didn't help that my aunt encouraged this belief.

When watching Hockey games the announcers would always say "he shoots, He scores!" well i always thought the announcer was saying "Pachutesy scores!!" Until one day when I asked my brother how Pachutesy was on every team, he couldn't stop laughing long enough to tell me. I figured out eventually on my own Pachutesy is not a player.

I used to belive Road Island was really an island and Hawaii and Alaska were next to each other becuase in school thats how they are on the map. I could never understand why it didnt snow in Hawaii. I didnt find out I was wrong until I was 21.

One day when I was about 8 we drove past a cricket field. When I asked my mum what the white screens were for she told me that they contained hidden cameras for spying on the crowd - yeah, nice one mum. I'm 30 now, but I still check my behaviour near those screens.
