When I was about four or five, I thought that Washington was a place full of soapy water, and people were just used to swimming around in it with furniture floating around in it. I grew up in Australia, but that's no excuse.

I used to think that football player's shoulder pads were actually their shoulders, so in order to be a pro football player, you had to be born with really huge shoulders.
When I was little, my dad would take me with him when he videotaped high school football games for the district. For some reason, I thought that football players couldn't talk. Boy was I startled when one of them came up to us and started to talk to me!
When i was a child i absolutely HATED sports and physical education. Now, my mother had told me about the Vietnam war and how there was a draft and any male over 18 could be called upon to fight and if they refused, they would be imprisoned.
So when i heard there was an NFL draft and an NBA draft, i thought it was the same idea, with the draftees selected at random amongst the general populace. I was so scared that when i turned 18, i was going to be selected and i would be forced to either play major league sports or rot in prison.

I used to think that when my mum talked about our 'address' that she was talking about and actual dress. I some how thought that each house was identified by a dress that was allocated to it by the government. This belief was also justified when I overheard mum talking to someone about where we lived and she said 'we live on the outskirts of town'. I always wanted to see this dress she was talking about.

I believed money didnt exist and you could just get anything you wanted.
When I was little I wanted to be president.
I thought a president has power to do whatever he or she wanted because I didn't know about the constitution or three branches of government. So I was determined to become president and make it a law that everyone had to have a horse.
I used to think that there was a main, or central, place in the world. Kind of like a capital city, but of the world. I thought where I lived was that place.
All American pennies say "In God we trust" and underneath that they have a portrait of a bearded man. Until I was 8 I thought the portrait was of God! Only later did I learn that it's Abraham Lincoln.
I thought the safari was a place you went, not a type of trip. I was trying to explain this to my sister telling her these characters were from the safari, she quickly set me straight. I was 15
i used to think that the highest number a football player had on his jersey was how many players were on the team; i was wondering why they needed to pay so many extra players when none of them substituted in. i looked for all the numbers in between!

I used to think when I saw a building with a sign saying 'founded' that it was always just there and someone finally found it and put up the sign
I used to believe that for adults, your age was equal to your wage. 35 year olds make $35,000 a year, a 45 year old makes ten thousand more than that. In my family, the older someone was, the more money they seemed to have, so it made perfect sense. I finally realized that people's ages can be much smaller or larger than their wages. (No comment regarding how I'm doing!)
