I used to think that Canada was only a 5 minutes drive away (I lived in New Jersey). But years later I learned it is more like an 8 hour dirve. And I must say, I was rather dissapointed
I used to believe that london, paris, venice, and switzerland were all cities in France.
When I was younger, to while away the hours, a few friends and I dug holes in the ground to see how deep we could go, well I was totally convinced that one day if we dug deep enough (like, just a couple of feet!!), that we would dig right through to Australia, imagine my disappointment when I realised that was never going to happen, by the way, I'm going to Australia next year, by......PLANE hahaha ( do you think someone in Australia might have thought the same thing and think they could dig through to Britain??) I wonder....
I used to live in Canada, so I never really learned about American states until I actually moved there around the time I was 10. I thought that Washington DC was a state and that Virginia and Maryland were just cities in it.
when I was about 8, me and my friends believed we could dig a hole to China, or at least South Africa (dont ask why South Africa, I really dont know)so we would spent all of our time at lunch trying to dig a hole to escape the school yard to go to China and everyday, we would start a new hole because our hole got covered up. hey, it helped pass the time.
When I was younger I knew about racism here in America, and I thought that it worked in reverse in Africa - like if I was a white person born over there, the black people would look down on me and treat me badly. It only seems fair, really. Of course, I also thought they didn't have cities over there, just tribes of people on the savannah. I hope they educate children better these days.
When I was a young child living in a suburb of Buffalo, New York, I remember being at home with my mother who often listened to the news on the radio. Often they would mention "the White House." Through our living room picture window, I could see a house across the street that was painted white. I thought that was The White House.
I thought the the white house was really near where I lived and we sometime drove by it on the freeway. It was just a building that had colums in the front.
When i was little i used to think that island were piece of land floating on top of the sea like a boat and there was a chain attaching it to the ocean floor like an achor(so it didn't float away)
Then i found out my country was an island and was devastated to find i had been misleading my friends and my family all my life
I thought Oklahoma was a place in Japan (due to it weird name :P), and Japan gave it to USA later.
I used to think Hungary and Turkey were the same country... I have no idea where that came from...
i can remember my parents saying they were thinking of moving house and asking me where i wanted to live. i said i didnt mind as long as it wasn't earnest. baffled by this answer they asked me why. so i told them that lots of people get murdered there and i would be too scared to sleep. they still didn't understand so i explained how on the news murder enquiries always begin in earnest!
The one day my sister said she was going to Washington DC for a field trip at school, and I wondered how she was there for a day, because I used to think Washington DC was the state of Washington (I live in Pennsylvania). I was so confused by it, and I believed that from the time I was 8.
My dad used to always tell me that all roads lead to Vernon. So in 12th when my I had a test in my italian class I the question "it is typically said in italy that all roads lead to what?" i answered vernon. I obviously go the answer wrong.
I used to think that Spain was in the sky. Just because everyone who went there went on a plane- and it was pretty much the only place anybody seemed to go to in our neigbourhood!
Because my mum often told me where people were from I believed that the town where my aunty lived was across the street because thats where she 'came from' last time I saw her. This similar principle applied to all my other relatives. There where a lot of towns just outside our house it seems.
I used to think that Los Angeles and L.A. were two different places. I thought that L.A. was "Elay" and that was where the airport was, like you would fly into Newark to visit New York City -- you flew into "Elay" to visit Los Angeles
i used to think belgium was a myth.
I used to think people in China went to American restaurants there and asked for forks to try them, as we did with chinese food and chopsticks.
i used to believe that africa only had wild animals and tribes absolutley no civilization until college when i met about 10 people from there and when i told them what i thought they all laughed at me! i guess i looked at too many national geographics!
