When I asked my Mum if Washington was called Washinton because people washed a lot there, she said yes, that was why. She doesn't admit it to this day... Lucky I never got asked why at school, I would have looked pretty silly.

When I was about 3 my parents would take me to a Christmas light show every year. (I called this "Light Move Land".) Every time we were driving at night and were going towards a city, I saw the dots of light (from the buildings) in the distance and thought we were going to "Light Move Land". Even once I realized what it really was, I still called it that.

I used to think my school actually disappeared on days when I didn't have school. I thought this because my mom was driving me somewhere on a day off and we went down what I thought was the street my school was on, but it wasn't, so of course my school wasn't on it...

I have often had strange associations with country names, like Kosov sounding like cassava, and macadamia sounding like Macedonia. There are many other Slavic or Balkan country names like this, such as Turkey and Hungary, that certainly does it for me.

When I was a little girl, I used to believe that if I dug a hole in the floor I could cross the planet and arrive in China to travel all around the country and after, dig some other holes to go to all countries of the world.
So to check if it was true or not, I tried it in my garden but it wasn't a great success and besides my parents thought that there was a mole !!

I used to think all urban city life in England had to take place in London, and everywhere else was just beaches and countryside. Think of places like the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District, for instance.

I mixed up Egypt and China, thinking they were the same place at different times. I also threw in “Europe” as well, all as one country. Blame Sawgwa and Schoolhouse Rock.

Once, when my we were driving across the country, my parents were talking about visiting Wisconsin. I thought they were talking about visiting a woman named Miss Consin. And I wondered if she was a friend of Mrs. Sippi.

I live in Baltimore, Maryland, and I used to think that Maryland was the name of my city and Baltimore was the name of my state! I also thought that you had to get searched when you crossed state boarders, but not when you crossed national boarders. Boy was I confused when we went to Pennsylvania to visit my grandparents!
