When I was a kid, we went on a field trip to the downtown area of where we lived. Our teacher was telling us that all of the places we were visiting would turn up the heat for us or something of that nature, but I somehow thought that the city was going to heat the whole downtown. I remember telling my parents this and wondering why they were laughing.
When I was a kid, I had heard that China was on the other side of the world. I lived in a valley, with hills on both sides, and I thought China was on the other side of those hills.
When I was four or five, I used to hear people talk about the BIG C. They meant the concrete letter C in the Berkeley Hills, (for the University of California) but, because we lived near the bay and several miles away, the hills looked bluish to me, and I thought they were part of the Big Sea.

I moved to Los Angeles from the midwest when I was 18, and was thrilled to hear reports on the radio about surfing conditions. But I always wondered where Port AuVere was located. I was 27 before I realized he was saying waves were "poor to fair."
I grew up in a small (pop. 369) village in central Illinois. My parents and I often took Sunday rides in the country. Every once in awhile my dad would say, "Today we'll go to Podunk; if we can find it." We never did find Podunck because Podunk did not exist (kinda like Kilroy). Dad said he had two friends who lived there; John Harvey D. C. V. Morecroppy and The Haythackers. Well, once in a while I still look for Podunk, and one day I think I saw the water tower!
I used to believe the end of the road where my Grandma lived was the end of the world. It was a dead-end and disappeared into sand dunes and stunted bushes adjacent to the sea; at night in bed I fancied I could hear the wailing of unfortunates who ventured there. It`s all built up now, of course, but I still have an uneasy feeling .....!!!!
When I first learned about George Washington crossing the Delaware, I thought that "delaware" was a word for a body of water somewhat bigger than a stream, but smaller than a river.
I used to believe that when you go to Disney land you would see the cartoon characters running around like on the Rodger Rabbit movie! I finally found out that it was people dressed up when i went to Florida when i was 10! lol
When I was young, I thought ALL European countries were monarchies with kings, queens, princesses, dukes, etc. And even Yugoslavia was wealthier than Spain.

I grew up near a place named Antioch, and when we visited there and my parents would say,"We're going to Antioch.", I'd say," I didn't know I had an Aunty Ock!". That was when I was four and my dad still teases me about it!
When I was a little kid and had lots of toys and many other house utility things …….all of them with a tag….. made in japan . I believed that japan was the only country in the world that made most of the things and supplied to all the countries . and I used to cherish anything that was made in u.s.a (America} like the schaefer pen ! . and yet believed japan to be the most productive country in the world for other things.
