my mother used to tell me that in new york city, it was against the law to look up at the buildings. she told me this because she didn't want me bumping into people, but i believed it for the longest time, and to this day i regret not having looked up at the twin towers more often.

When I was little I believed that all countries and continents were actually floating on the water and not attached to the earth. I could never work out why they didnt float around all over the place though!

I used to be certain that the carving of the 3 presidents in the USA was natural and that it was just a coincidence that they bore a resemblence to real presidents. I was 20 and studying for a degree before i was informed that this was not the case.

i used to believe that i had been to europe. one time my parents took me to a large body of water and told me it was "the other side of the ocean." it must have been a large lake or something. anyway, they disavow any knowledge of telling me this to this day. i know it happened.

In my early childhood days, of which my memory is vague, the TV show The Honeymooners was still on live, and my parents were big fans of it. That is no doubt why I'd heard of Audrey Meadows, one of its stars. But I wasn't clear whether Audrey Meadows was a person, place ot thing, or whatever. I probably heard her first name more like "Autree", like that might be a kind of tree, perhaps. Meanwhile, in those same days and ongoing to times of my slightly clearer memories, my family often visited the North Carolina mountains, where one of our frequent stops was a Blue Ridge Parkway recreation area called Crabtree Meadows. I perceived that Crabtree Meadows and Audrey Meadows must be similar entities, reinforcing my probable tendency to hear Audrey as "Autree", like it were perhaps a kind of tree. I got to wondering why on most of our mountain trips we would go to Crabtree Meadows, but we never went to Audrey Meadows, which must be some kind of similar place. It wasn't until I came home from college that I realized who Audrey Meadows was and why I'd heard of her back then, for at that time my parents were again watching The Honeymooners, then in reruns.

When I was 4 or 5, I was told that the man who had built our house had moved to Florida when he was finished. I imagined a state covered in tile as far as the eye could see, with lots of houses sitting there on that giant FLOOR, built by the guy who built our house and was maybe just tired of hills and grass and stuff.

I used to belive that no one but Aussies & people from New Zealand had ever heard of New Zealand, like it was too small & insignifiant for anyone to have ever heard of it.

When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade I always thought that there was another side of the world beside the one that we say on a flat map; like you had to turn in around to see the other side.

Until I was about 10 I beieved that people could actually dig to China, and I told my friend that if we dug in the sandbox far enough, we could get to China. Then he told me that if we dug to China, the chinese dug to here. But if we dug too far and took a wrong
turn underground, we would get to hell!
So everyday, if I saw an Asian man outside, i would compliment him about his digging skills, but if I saw a construction worker digging, or even someone in the sandbox, I would scream at the top of my lungs and cry and tell them to stop.I was to horrified to dig for the next 6 years! Then i found out that you cant dig to hell. you just burn in flaming hot magma burning your skin in a terrible abyss of pain and fire while screaming in terror while burning into an oblivion!!!What a relief...

Until I was about fifteen, I genuinely thought that all gas stations had giant pipes from the refineries underneath them to bring them gas.
Then I saw a fuel truck and my childhood was destroyed.

I used to believe that the Netherlands was the world. And the world was round, so my country was round. When I went on a holiday to Spain with my family we went by plane. So I figured Spain was another ball shaped country hanging in space. You had to take a plane to get there, of course! So the planet was to me a collection of spheres in different sizes closely together in space.
