wehn me and my younger sister were about 5 and 6 (in the 80's) we lived near an airport, i used to tell her the planes were bombers from the war (second world war) and if they heard us moving about underneath them they would bomb us, my sister believed me and i had to come clean when i looked down on the botton bunk and saw my sister had turned blue from holding her breath.

i used to believe that when the traffic lights turned from green to red, there were little men inside watching the intersection to change the lights when there were cars coming.

I used to believe that blind people could drive, because their dogs could bark at the traffic lights. I stopped thinking this when I found out that dogs were color blind, and couldn't tell one light from another...

My cousin told me when I was a kid that that white smoke pattern in the sky that is left by certain planes was really Superman farting in the sky. I believed her.

When i was younger my dad had a Toyota 'SPACE CRUISER' i thought it was called that because if you press a button it cruised to space, only when i was 7 i realised it was called that because it had a lot of space inside

Whenever I'd ride on a bus as a kid, and the bus driver would stop and open the door near railroad tracks (to listen for oncoming trains), I always thought that s/he was opening the door to let any homeless people near the tracks onto the bus.
Not that I'd ever *seen* homeless people near the train tracks. I'd only heard about them in stories. But that's why I imagined the bus driver was stopped.

when i was about 7 or 8 my dad had to get surgery on his left shoulder. a few weeks after that, we were driving on the highway and there was a sign that said "left shoulder ok," meaning it was ok to drive on the left shoulder of the road. but i thought the "highway people" (whoever they were) were personally talking to my dad and asking if his shoulder was ok!

I used to believe…

my parents and i used to drive to my grandparents' house almost every weekend, and we had to take the highway to get there. we'd usually come back at night, so everyone's headlights were on. i was absolutely convinced, until i was about 6 or 7, that the lane we were in (where i could see the taillights of cars in front of us) was the lane for cars with red lights, and the other lane (where i could see the headlights if oncoming traffic) was the lane with cars with white lights.

i used to think there were monkeys working inside street signals changing the colors (red, yellow, green)

When I was 5, we lived in the country for a year. There was a rail line that passed right near the bottom of our vegetable garden; I could see the trains from my bedroom window. I would stay up all night watching them. At the end of the year we moved to Winnipeg, and I just assumed that there would be a train through our backyard there, too. I was crushed when there wasn't.

I used to believe…

The street sign on my street was always getting knocked down by cars running into it, but the "Dead End Street" sign was always there so I thought I lived on Dead End Street. I always got angry when my mother ordered pizza using the wrong street name and was proven right every time because the pizza guy could never find our house.

When I was about 3 I believed wholeheartedly, without a doubt, that I could drive. And not just any car, a Volkswagon.

My sister told me that on certain days, you could buy a real car from a vending machine for six dollars.

I asked how they fit them all in there, but she refused to explain any further.

driving back from a trip to disney world when i was around 5 years old, my dad turned on the windshield wipers to wash the windshield, and when the washer fluid sprayed onto the window I asked where that water came from. My mom told me that Dumbo was peeing on the car. I totally believed her and was so amazed that he was following US home.

I used to believe…

My dad usually drank a pop when he drove. In the first grade, my teahcer asked the class what our New Years resolution was going to be. I told her I was going to help my dad stop drinking and driving.

When i was younger, I am now a modest 22, i was told that the lines on the rear window of a car where there so you could judge the gradient of the hill you were driving up, how? Who's knows, but it seemed like a rational explanation, so i believed it, and when someone asked me what they were i would share my wordly knowledge, thinking i was dead smart and i did this until i was 18!!!!!!! It was only when i bought my own car and when i tried to be a big head on cars in the garage i was corrected by the salesmen and told there were actually to heat up the back window - ummmmmm!

When I was little my dad used to drive this really old car and when he pressed the accelerator it made a loud noise from the exaust. I figured that if more noise comes from the exaust when you go faster, it must be the air coming out of the exaust that pushes the car along. It really screwed my head up when he reversed because there was no exaust at the front.
BOOYAH!
(I believed that I would also invent a 2 exausted car)

I used to believe…

All through my childhood years my dad used to travel from the US to the UK for three week trips three times a year. We always went on the trips to and from the airport to drop him off and pick him up. My little sister for many years never realised he actually went somewhere. She thought he just climbed on the plane and stayed there for three weeks. So she played "Going to England" and would pack up all her stuffed animals in suitcases, go get on the "plane" (sofa), stay there a bit, and then "come home" again. It was quite a shock to her when she realised he did things other than just sit on the plane for the entire trip.
