When I was younger I would read the traffic signs on the side of the road but could never understand why we were passing the ones that clearly said "DO NOT PASS" - I finally decided it must mean going off the road onto the area behind the sign. Obviously I was wrong on both counts!
I used to believe that there were people or something under the traffic lights waiting to switch them back to don't walk. How else did they switch back when people stopped walking over. I couldn't see what ever it was, so presumed they were UNDERGROUND, so whenever I crossed a road i used to tap dance and stamp so they wouldn't switch before i crossed.

when I was just a wee kid, I thought that when you brought dogs on airplanes, they put the dogs in wings. just loose, running around in a big free-for-all dog party in the wings up at 30,000 feet.

i used to think traffic lights were controlled by a whole team of specialists in a nasa-like building, pressing buttons to make the lights red and green
I was about 4 years old and i remeber thinking, how hard it must be to drive.Because you had to look through your front window, and through the back window of the car in front of you, and then through their front window, and again through the back window of the next car to drive on the road... so i was a *special* kid...leave me alone...

My family and I would go on road trips every year. My parents would always tell me to wear my seatbelt but what did I care nothing bad was really going to happen if I wasn't wearing it. I told this to my sister and she told me that the little man on the seatbelt safety light would come kill me if I didn't wear it. Apparently, mom and dad neglected to tell me that bit. I never forgot to buckle up after that.

when i was learning to read i used to think that PASS WITH CARE signs said PASS WITH CAR and there was a sidewalk by the road. i thought that to pass that sign you had to take your car with you. i thought that to go for a walk on the sidewalk you had to pull your car with a rope to pass the sign on the sidewalk

Up until the age of about 8, I used to think that people actualybrought their cars with strange triangular boxes on top of them, and I just used to think,"why would people pay for that?! why don't they just have a normal car?" but then slowly, I began to learn that they were learner cars and weren't sold to the public at all, how silly!

My dad used to drive a rolls royce lorry and when he left the job he took the Rolls Royce badge off the lorry. years later my family had an FSO, which is a form of Lader, in other words pretty much the worst car on the market. my dad wittily put the rolls royce badge on the front. when i was 6 my class teacher asked us what type of car we had, when it got to me i replied "A Rolls Royce". naturally the teacher doubted this some what and said she'd ask my mum. she must have been quite amused when she found out i had an lader! lol.
Bizzarely someone tried to steal the rolls royce badge off the front of our car.

driving with my father when I was six, he said " I have been driving down this road ten years and have never seen a yied cross this street" for years when I saw a yield crossing sign, I looked at both sides of the road for one to jump out.

When I was around 4 or 5, I thought that traffic lights were changed to red or green by policemen. I thought the policemen were right there at each intersection even though I never saw them - I figured they were just behind a tree or in the bushes or something.
When I saw a "No turn on red" sign, I thought that meant that the policeman working at that intersection was new and kept forgetting and leaving the green light on, so the sign was to remind him, "No, don't just leave the green light on, turn on red." Apparently they never forgot to turn on the green lights.

When I used to see the sign 'police accident' I thought it meant that a police car had crashed.
I can remember riding in the car as a child and seeing signs on the side of the road that read "Do Not Pass". I was always nervous that my parents were going to get in trouble for not stopping. They never seemed to even contemplate stopping, and no other cars ever stopped, either. These signs were often followed by "Pass with Care" signs, which made me think that we had to be especially cautious for some reason when traveling there. I was always aware that nobody else seemed to be upset by all the illegal "passing" that was going on so I figured they had to know something I didn't and that it would be revealed to me in time. I knew I would get laughed at if I asked out loud, so I never did. I would watch from the back seat to see if they saw the sign and if they would slow down or look out for hidden obstacles.
Yes, I am still neurotic.

When I was younger I knew that the earth spun. Well, I assumed then that when you were driving, the car wasn't really moving, the earth was spinning and the wheels moved to let the earth spin while the car stayed still!
I used to think that there were little men who lived in stop lights, and they could see outside. To make the lights change, they would look out, see if traffic was safe, and flick switches inside.

Unlike some of the posts here, I didn't think there were little men or animals operating the traffic lights, I thought the traffic lights were happy when they were green, surprised when they turned yellow and then mad when they were red.
I used to believe there were little men inside traffic lights. Their jobs were to push different buttons to make the lights change colors. I wanted to be a little man who worked in their when I grew up. :-)
i used to believe that cars had to be plugged in, and that there was a really long cord stretching from your car to your garage. i always used to look for the cord but i could never find it.
