I'm from Israel, and in Hebrew the word 'traffic jam' is the same as a cork. And I always believed that traffic jams are caused because there's a cork in the middle of the street (like from a coke bottle) that somebody left and all the other cars are just trying to avoid

Whenever I heard "cross at the green, not in between," I thought it meant that you were supposed to cross the street when the light is green and all the cars are going, and not when the light is in between (yellow or red). Clearly this was wrong. I made up my own rhyme, "Cross at the red, or get run over instead." It took me years to realize that the rhyme just tells kids to cross at the traffic light.

Up until I was in my twenties I could not understand how Deer Crossing signs worked.. I mean, how could the deer understand that they were supposed to cross the road where the sign was??? It didn't dawn on me until one day I saw a neighbor had posted a "baby raccoon crossing" sign in the neighborhood - that did it for me - I knew that baby raccoons could not possibly understand the sign...then it all started filtering in.....

My sister and I used to believe that my Dad could correctly predict when the stop light would turn green. We would try to out guess him but always lose. It wasn't until I was about 7 that I realized that the stop light going the other way turned yellow right before our light turned green...

My parents had me convinced (and I still cant do it) that if you ran the vacuume over the cord, you would die. And they told me that the yellow lines in the middle of the road are where runaway kids have to walk. Also, the "watch for falling rocks" signs meant that you had to watch for a little runaway indian boy named Falling Rocks.

Some really smart kid told me that the sensation of movement while in a car was an illusion. Really, it was the earth turning. I was ready to buy this until I noticed cars coming in the opposite direction - then I became very confused.
