I used to believe…
We used to go to Lake Tahoe every summer, and there are signs everywhere warning of falling rock...my mother convinced my older sister that 'Watch for Falling Rock' was a sign put up by an Indian Chief years ago, becuase he lost his son, Falling Rock, and they never found him. I believe my sister was well into her teens before she figured it out....
I had a friend who told me that when she was young, she couldn't understand how they shrunk the plane's passengers because the plane looked to be the same size as a bird in the sky.

My grandparents used to live in the north side of the country so every time they visited they would take the train. My brother believed that EVERY train was "grandpa's train". He would seriously make my dad stop at the train station every day after school so that we could look at grandpa's train for hours!!!

I once told my dad that highjackers wait for the airplane to go up in the sky really high until it was too small...Then they would grab it!

When I was a child I used to believe that the tracks jets made in the sky were from the tail fin of the plane scratching the top of the sky. Because of this I also thought those planes that did that were the "sky scrapers" people were talking about.

my gran used to have a rail line at the bottom of her garden and i used to beleive that trains were wolves, my sister would tell me this then run and lock herself in the shed and leave me outside until the last moment, this added to the fear as i never saw that they weren't wolves.
I was 5 (1963) riding the little school bus through the streets of Chicago after school and I remember noticing how a little green arrow would flash on the dashboard prior to each turn. When I asked the driver about the arrow, she said it showed which direction the bus would turn. I suddenly felt panicked at the idea that my destination was ultimately controlled by the whims of this vehicle, and that I may not return home that afternoon, ending up God knows where. I kept my fear to myself, and was relieved to find myself deposited at the old brownstone building where I lived. Funny thing is, as soon as I got home, I forgot all about this close brush with technological capriciousness.

Whenever we were going somewhere in our car, my mum always told me that the car would not start unless I was wearing my seat-belt. Of course, she meant that she would not start the car, but until I was about ten years old, I thought that seat-belts were somehow connected to a car's engine.

When I was small I thought that my parent's car didn't move over the Earth, rather, that we kept going straight and the world turned itself to accomodate where we were going. Then I factored in that there were cars travelling in the opposite direction and ones even turning when we weren't. I was then forced to believe that the world itself was just a giant rubix cube turning and rotating itself all at once so everyone could get where they were going. Eventually I figured it out.
I used to think the car's blinker had to be on for it to be able to turn. O_O;
I and all the kids in my family used to believe that you had to pick your feet up when driving over a bridge or they would get wet. We would also duck down when we passed an old abandoned shack so that the ghosts that lived there would not haunt us later.
I used to believe that the 'Blind Driveway' signs mean that a blind person lived there so you better watch out because they might just walk (or drive!) right out in front of your car.
I used to believe that people got smaller to fit into airplanes because they looked so small in the sky. I asked my mom how they got people to be small enough to fit into airplanes.
