I used to believe…

Whenever I saw a sign that said "Not a Through Street", I thought it meant the street was still under construction. They weren't "through" building.

I also confused through and thorough.

I used to believe…

Loose chippings
My mother told me to shut my window in the car or loose chippings ( these looked like large frogs with sharp teeth) would spring out of the hedge row and eat me. I was probably a teenager when I sussed it

I used to believe…

When my mom was young her and her family would always go camping and pass signs that said "falling rock." My grandfather told my mother and her siblings that falling rock was the ghost of an indian princess and if you looked real close maybe you could find her. My mom believed this up to the age of 17. Until one day when she was driving with some of her friends and started to tell everyone to look for falling rock.

i used to think that the signs that said "not a thru street" meant that no one was allowed to go onto that street...i always wondered how people got to the houses in those streets

When I was really young, I used to play with gear shift when the car wasn't running. To make me stop, my mom told me that if I played with it, the car would implode. I believed it till I was 12!

I used to think that the streetlights propelled cars along the highway at night. I saw the refracted light in the glass and thought they were rays of light that somehow pushed the car. I'm not sure how I thought we got around during the day.

I used to believe…

when I was a small child, I would while away long car journeys on rainy days by wondering what made the windscreen wipers move.
When I was about 5 or 6, it suddenly occurred to me that of course it was a ghost was sitting on the bonnet, + as my parents didn't seem concerned, it must have been a freind of theirs when it was alive.
This thought terrified me so much that I had to close my eyes every time the wipers moved.

I used to believe…

The first time I went on an airplane, I overheard my parents saying something about being "bumped" when you flew on an airplane, and I heard them saying you got wherever you were going faster if you were bumped. That was about all I heard. I had no idea what being "bumped" meant, so naturally, I assumed that it meant you were, quite literally, bumped to your destination. I figured that you got on the plane, and the plane got on top of a big trampoline, and the plane bounced so high that when you landed, you wound up where you wanted to go. Either that, or your family got on a big trampoline (without any plane or anything to keep you safe) and bounced to your destination along a big, long trail of trampolines. I wasn't quite sure how that got you there faster, though.

I used to believe…

When I was five or six and my family was driving I used to pay careful attention to all the road signs (I had just learned how to read). Once we came to a sign that said 'Do not pass' and I got really scared because I thought it was illegal to go past those signs. I believed this until I was about nine.

I used to believe…

A friend of mine and I (around 3rd grade) were looking at a globe and pointing out various places like the United States, the oceans, etc. She then told me that the thick line running around the middle of the globe was the railroad track. It floated over the oceans and allowed people to get to wherever they needed to go!

I used to believe that little elves lived in traffic lights and controlled them.

My mom used to drive us over a ramp called Dead Man's Curve and it terrified me. I thought that when we drove over it we were going to die. My mom would call out "We're going over Dead Man's Curve!" without realizing that I was scared out of my mind.

I used to believe…

Do not pick up hitchhikers - your parents tell you that when you start driving and you hear some horror stories on the news. After driving for several years I finally saw an actual road sign with that warning. Took me a few more years to figure out why .. there was minimum security prison nearby. Well, duh!

I was in london on holiday when I saw a guy run for a bus.
I said to my mum "Look, someone stole the busdrivers bus!"
The man then jumped on the back of it at the last second and I said "Ah it's okay, he caught it."

Coming from a large city with hundreds of different street names, I wondered why so many small towns were stuck on using the name 'Frontage Road'.
