I used to believe…

As a little un my Mum had an old VW beatle and I used to think that the speed limit existed because if you went over the speed limit, all the buildings would collapse because of the increased vibrations of the car! That's why you were allowed to drive really fast on the motorway because there were no buildings!

I used to believe that as cars got older they aged and turned round and fat like my grand parents. I remember asking in the sixties when our car was going to start looking old like the fifties cars.

I used to believe that stoplights were controlled by people. I thought that there was a man in a room that overlooked intersections (every intersection), and pressed buttons to change the light.

I used to believe…

When I was little I thought that traffic lights were controlled by little men who lived underground and timed when the light needed to be changed.

I use to believe when I saw an airplane in the sky my grandparents were on it and would see on the ground and wave hi. I would wave back and do that with all airplanes.

I used to think that if I took my eyes from the road for just one moment while my parents were driving, we'd immediately get in an accident. Even late at night, I'd strain to stay awake, peering from the backseat at the road, completely convinced it was my gaze keeping the car in the lane and all other cars away.

I was a very paranoid child.

I used to believe…

One of the first times I flew on an aeroplane (when I was a toddler)... After seeing the safety video, introducing the safety procedures during a crash or whatever, I believed that you had to sit in the brace position for the entire flight! About an hour in my mum and dad told me that it was only if the aeroplane crashed... duh.

I used to believe that you could squeeze jumper cables with your hands to jump-start a car (with one end attached to the car battery, of course). I guess this belief started when I saw Vicki the Robot do it on "Small Wonder."

I used to believe…

You know the automatic carwashes? You know, the one where you drive through and those blue scrubber things clean your car? Well, when I was little, I was scared to death of those things, so my sister told me that they were all relatives of cookie monster (the muppet from sesame street), and that they were having a family reunion! I can't believe I actually believed her!

i used to believe that aeroplanes would fly and land on the street of the persons house that you wanted to visit, i though how sad it was that the planes were knocking down all the houses on the street. The thought of an airport was just too extraordinary, plus it didnt envolve houses being demolished.

I used to believe…

Sometimes I'd see an arrow-shaped green light, and the ones that pointed upward I thought existed to guide airplanes.

I assumed there was a runway somewhere near, and because I was at this particular intersection with airplane lights, I might get to see an airplane go right over my head at any moment!

hall of fame

I used to believe those "watch for Fallen Rock" signs were about a missing person.
I'd spend every road trip looking for him.

I spent some time at a cottage when I was a kid. There was a sign from the Ministry of Transportation (M.O.T) at the local marina (run by a first nations band) that said "SLOW RIGHT DOWN / NO WAKE / M.O.T"

I always figured if we didn't slow the boat down enough the sleeping MOT monster would wake up and eat us...

I used to believe that when people flushed the toilet on aeroplanes, it just dropped out of the plane, so that was why houses were cheaper under flight paths. I have no excuse bar my age for my innocent stupidity. :(

I used to believe…

When I was 3 and just learning about words and reading, I noticed a sign on the road to our house that said "Speed Checked by Radar." I thought it said "Speed Chicken" and I used to love to picture this giant chicken running up and down the highway telling people to slow down.

I used to believe there were little tiny troll-like men who lived inside the traffic lights. I remember them: sitting behind a computer with several screens and buttons, etc. Man, were they ugly.
I also used to believe that red was stop, green was slow and yellow was go. Thank God I was proven wrong before I got my license.

I used to think buses were the same as the school coach!

I used to believe…

when i was little i used to think that to make a car go you had to move the stearing wheel, it wasn't until one time when i was in a bumber card and it wouldn't go the i had to push a petal

I used to believe…

When I was younger, my mom told me how traffic lights and street lights worked. I thought she was totally lying, and so I became convinced that all the lights that moved or turned on at certain times were operated by tiny gnomes who sat around and knew when to change the light.

hall of fame

I always used to think that grownups whispered where they wanted to go and the car went by itself!
