When I was a kid I never realized there were airports, so I thought planes had long ladders that you climbed up.

I always used to travel with my family when I was a little kid, so I was used to the whole airport security routine. My parents said that I couldn't say "bomb" or "gun" in the airport, and I was a good child so I didn't. However, the reason I didn't say them was because I thought that if I said those words, the security cameras would fire lasers at me and I wouldn't be allowed on the plane!

— Clueless Traveler

i thought that the phrase "jet lag" was actually "jet leg" until i was 17...

when i was a kid i used to believe that different states were up in the sky. to fly from new york to californa, you go really high up in the air...so california must in the sky, right? i remember looking up in the sky and saying to my mom "i don't see aunties house"

— corinne

If the light on a plane flashed and you saw it from the ground, that was because the pilot and/or co-pilot saw you. The polite things to do was wave back.

My family would goto Italy every few years. The flights always flew through the night. I used to believe the airplane would actually leave the Earth, fly through outer space, and then return to Earth to land in Italy.

— Frank Ponch

My older brother told me he once saw a man summon a helicopter to land and pick him up by pointing his index finger and waving his outstretched arm over his head in a circular motion. Needless to say every time I saw a helicopter I did the same thing, hoping it would land in the front yard, the playground, a parking lot, and take me away on a great adventure.

— Claudette

My Mum used to believe that an aeroplane went up into the air and waited for the world to turn around so the place they wanted to go to was beneath the plane!

— Mel C

Since I never saw wheels under an airplane when it was flying, I thought that when the plane took off, the wheels fell off too. I always wondered how the plane landed with no wheels.

— N.B.

I used to think that countrys were layed on top of eachother with clouds in-between and thats why we took areoplanes, because they would fly us up there.

— Gillian

i used to believe that the white smoke trails planes left in the sky WERE the planes. i didn't understand how they had doors or windows or how anyone traveled on them.

I used to love fighter jets when I was a toddler, and figured that they went so fast because of the flames that came out of the afterburner. One day my cousin and I made several dozen paper airplanes and lit the backs of them on fire, fully expecting them to dart out of our hands...didn't really help the speed of the plane but it looked cool. And nothing went faster than when my grandfather saw a smoldering pile of paper airplanes. My theory was close, just a little misguided...

— Paper Pilot

when I was just a wee kid, I thought that when you brought dogs on airplanes, they put the dogs in wings. just loose, running around in a big free-for-all dog party in the wings up at 30,000 feet.

— andrew

When a friend was going on an airplane for the first time when he was young, he looked out the window, saw all the buildings and cars getting smaller and smaller, turned to his mother, and proclaimed "This is a big hill!"

— Evilrabbit

I used to think that aeroplanes came to your house to pick you up.

When I was about four, I had never been on a plane before. I had heard about (and seen) stunt planes, but I thought that those planes were commercial planes that had passengers traveling on them. When I was six and went on my first plane ride, I thought it would go really fast, twist and turn, and do barrel rolls, and I dreaded that part of the plane ride. I was astonished when the plane traveled ridiculously slow and stayed right side up the whole time. Now I would love to be on a plane ride that feels like a roller coaster.

— Would make the flight more interesting

I had a friend who told me that when she was young, she couldn't understand how they shrunk the plane's passengers because the plane looked to be the same size as a bird in the sky.
