I was told by a friend at school, and believed completely until I was almost an adult, that if your nail broke (or you bit it) down to the pink then it wouldn't grow back. This was because only the white bit grew, the pink was always the same size. It didn't stop me biting my nails but I did it VERY carefully!
My parents used to tell me that if I chewed my fingernails, little bugs would come crawling out from underneath them. What they didn't count on was that tomboys love bugs...
Once a friend told me that if I kept biting my nails, a big nail ball would grow inside my small intestine because they wouldn't get digested and then the doctors would have to do an operation to take the nail ball out. I am still not sure if that is true or not. Just kidding. I was stupid enough to believe that when I was 11.
I use to beleive that bitting my nails will give me powers to stop being afraid.

my great uncle had nubs on some of his fingers from a chopping block accident. whenever he saw me biting my fingernails he would tell me that his fingers were the way they were from biting his nails... it was a good try, but it didn't stop me.
When I was young, my teacher once told me that if I bit my nails and swallowed the bits I'd bitten off that they would go into my liver and cut it to shreds. I believed this for quite a few years!
My mum used to tell me if you accidently swallowed a bit of your nail it would go down inside you and make your appendix explode. I soon discovered this wasnt true and carried on biting my nails.
when i was little, my sister was in bilogy and she told me about all the little bugs and organisms crawling and living on my hands, and on the carpet since i spent most of my time there playing, and she said that when i bit my nails i ate the bugs. I never did bite my nails again...
When I was about 4 years old, I used to chew my nails occasionaly, and as another bad habit, I used to sometimes swallow gum. My Grandmother told me that I was going to end up with a big ball of gum and fingernails in my stomach
My mom used to tell me that if you bit your fingernails and ate it that you would get worms inside. It didn't stop me from biting my nails though.
When I was about 5 - 10 ,I had a really bad habit of biting my nails.(fingers and toes)My mom told me that I could get worms in my stomach from the dirt underneath and I believed her.I am still not sure if it is true..but my daughter does the same thing,but the story did not work on her for she is still eating her nails.

when me and my sister were young, my mom painted our nails red and told us if we kept on biting our nails we would eat the nailpolish and die. my sisters nails are now really long and pretty, but i kept on biting mine and now they're still really messed up and short.

I can't remember who it was, but when I was young, a family member told me that if I kept biting my nails I would eventually get appendicitis. It didn't stop me. I finally did stop about 5 years ago, but i wasn't because I lived in fear of a raputured appendix.
