Divided Highway signs used to look like the front half of a men's dress shoe-print. I thought that it was a cautionary sign for pedestrians who might have been walking along the median that they would have to step down into traffic (the arrows).
A childhood belief about road signs

others believed things like this
- I thought for the longest time that a No Standing traffic sign meant no person should stand near that sign.— Shannon
- i used to believe that the green arrows on the traffic lights told you which way you had to go to get home.— Helen
- when the sign on the highway said do not pass and dad did i thought he would be in great dangerAnon
- I used to believe I could fly.
All I had todo was step of a flight of stairs and I'd be walking in the air...— Dolly - I thought the “Slippery When Wet” traffic sign was a car that had grown long bendy legs.Anon
- If you step on the cracks in tiles when walking through a street, fairies will die.— Maddie
