I used to believe that every night when everyone was sleeping, pirates went door-to-door and checked every doorknob, and if you forgot to lock your door, they would come in and steal everything in your house and kidnap or kill all the adults, although they would never harm small children. This belief was broken after waking up one morning to discover that the door had been unlocked all night.
