I thought every single organisation had a government observer and the entire nation was working for some sort of plan that all the adults were hiding from us.

I thought that wars and battles were the same thing, and that conflict between countries were all just settled with one big fight.

I used to believe the UK wasn't really free. I always heard that the US was special because it was a "free country", and learning about the American Revolution confused me as well, so I assumed the UK still wasn't "free"

The Chinese restaurant my parents took me to had a Styrofoam cup that sat on the counter and had "Tips appreciated" written on it. I thought you were supposed to write cooking tips on your receipt (if you were a good cook) and throw them in the cup so their chefs could learn how to cook better.

I was super anxious the first time my family went to a Chinese restaurant, because I thought they'd throw you out if you weren't Chinese.

I used to seriously misunderstand the concept of voting. I assumed whoever voted for one option would get it and whoever voted for the other option would get the other, instead of the option with more votes affecting everyone.

I used to believe the world was a horrible place full of selfish people, hypocrites, liars and murderers. Now I know the world is only like that if you look at it that way.

I used to think when you lost balloons, they would go to balloon land. I thought my balloons would be happier there, so every time I got a balloon I let it go, thinking it would fly to balloon land. And sometimes I'd bring it home, and let it go from my balcony. I began to think as balloons as a separate species. I wanted to send a note along with one and see if the leader of balloon land would write back to me, but then I got worried that an evil balloon might get ahold of it and take my mom to balloon land.

Don't worry, I'm normal now.

I remember sitting in the car, looking out the window, thinking that the world was just a big old doll house and we were the dolls.

when I was 8 I asked my dad if we could go to disneyland, he told me we didn't have enough money for it, so I suggested we go to the bank to get some. Thats when he had to explain he needs to put the money in before he can take it out. This notion seemed like madness to me, I couldn't figure out what the point of it was, though he did try to explain it to me...but at that moment I realized money doesn't magically come out of an ATM machine.

I used to believe that the world is a wonderful place full of great people, a world where good people are rewarded for being honest and gentle, a world where I could be happy.

when i was 2 or 3, my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins were always talking about going to Miami. I thought they said "My Ami" so i always wondered why I didn't have my own "ami" to go to.
