The first time I hear about a serial killer, I laughed. You can't kill cereal. It's not alive.
when i was a kid i used to think you were supposed to call 911 on someone if they ran a red light
I asked my mom if there were still pirates, like in "Peter Pan." She said, no all the pirates had been caught and put in jail. So I believed that if you went down to the county jail, the cells would be full of pirates (complete with eye patches, peg legs, etc.).
My speech wasn't the best, so when my dad said he was going to ground me, I thought he was saying "drown me" because that's how I said it. I told him it was illegal and he would be in big trouble if he did that. It was a long time before I figured out what getting grounded meant.
When I was younger (4-7?, I'm 13 now), I used to believe that serial killers hid in your cereal box and jumped and killed you when you opened the box. So, after hearing the word 'serial killer', I refused to eat cereal for several weeks.
I used to get nervous when my mom went to the drug store because I thought that they sold illegal drugs. I was afraid that if she got caught she'd get arrested. My grandma drove us all there one day and my mom went in and I was torn between disbelief that my mom would involve grandma in these shenanigans and shock that grandma was a willing participant.
My Dad had a government job and he used to bring home these pens that were stamped "property of US Government".I felt a little odd using them but one day I broke my one and the military police were going to come and arrest me!I had the evidence in my closet and waited.Fortunately they were too busy with the war I thought and spared me.
I used to think that police officers were like fisherman. Due to the fact that my father always used the term "pulled over", I thought cops sat at the side of the road with a fishing pole and pointed out cars to each other asking each other their opinions about pulling over that car, "hey what about that green Toyota?" For years, I was so scared that they would want to pull over our car with their fishing rods.
When I was a kid, every time the lights in our house would dim, I thought another prisoner on death row was being electrocuted. Just like in the movies.

When I was a child, I always wanted to grow up to be a policeman because I thought that policemen couldn't get arrested!
I used to think that when someone was "under arrest" it meant that when they went to jail they would get the bottom bunk so they would have to sleep "under a rest"-ing prisoner.

I believed serial killers were people who poisoned cereal to kill others.
When I was little I used to believe that certain policemen would sit at computer screens and watch every car on the road. The screen would tell them if you were speeding, not wearing you seatbelt and any other illegal things. I believed it was the only way the police could be able to catch people.
I once asked my dad why the police can't catch the robbers since the stripey tops, black masks and swag bag give them away. Obviously all burglars where this attire all the time!
I thought bad people in real life all looked weird/ugly like on cartoons. For this reason I was confused when adults said not to talk to strangers since they might be bad people because couldn't you tell if someone was bad just by looking at them?
When I was little, I thought that if a police officer's kid got in trouble at home, he/she would go to jail instead of getting spanked.
I thought the police didn't have to follow the law and could do whatever they want. My reasoning was they were the enforcers of the law so who would arrest them or whatever? I wondered why all the bad people didn't just become cops so they could do crimes with impunity.
When I was little, my grandfather used to tell me that if you ever got sent to jail, the only thing they would let you eat would be birdseed and Coca-Cola. I believed this for years and was terrified that I would get sent to jail if I was bad in any way, and I would sit and contemplate how they could possibly make people survive on just birdseed and Coke! I believed it for a long time until I finally found out the truth. Although I am proud to say I've never been arrested for anything :)
when I was young I thought when your tooth fell out the tooth fairy would take it to her factory grind it into a powder give it to toothpaste makers and that was what was in toothpaste!
